As in the case of all great men, Gandhi’s mistakes also proved to be costly. Yet, in my opinion very few of Gandhi’s contemporaries knew the strengths and weaknesses of Indians as he did. His programmes of satyagraha, non-cooperation, boycott etc.,were designed as potent weapons in the hands of the weak, poor, divided Indians and achieved surprising results, khilafat and muslim-appeasement not withstanding. His greatest blunder lies in not taking Hindus into full confidence owing to his doubts about their capability to achieve independence all by themselves. In this he did not learn lesson from the long saga of Hindu resistance and survival through unimaginable oppression and hardships. The most unforgivable blunder of Gandhi was his support to that Hindu enemy Nehru. But then he might have feared that if he did not support Nehru’s PMship, the fellow might join Jinnah’s band and demand another partition for his family! Whatever that may be the economic and social blueprint envisioned by Gandhi was a truly desi one and most suitable to India. It is our misfortune that Nehru’s socialist-industrialist model won the day and Gandhi’s desi model got shelved. Prasad.
